“There has to be a clear idea of which shelf to put your book on”.
OK, I guess.
In my case I am thinking that my book should go on the science fiction shelf. Even though I don’t think I am necessarily “genre writing”. I think I am calling my stuff “sexy humorous sci fi”. That could be shortened to “shy-fi”. Or possibly I could call it sic-fi (sex-infused comedic sci fi). “Here is Jackson South’s new sick fi novel” has a ring to it. OK, it might be quite a dark ring.
As part of my foray into books about writing, I have recently looked at Stephen King’s “On Writing”. I did enjoy the line “This is a short book because most books about writing are filled with bullshit”.
Of course bullshit is one of those ubiquitous things which kindof diffuses through the universe. It is probably similar to gravitational waves, but a bit easier to detect.
At least if you write bullshit you don’t need to worry about which shelf to put it on. Wherever you put it, it has plenty of company, and doesn’t look totally out of place. And at the same time it also doesn’t look totally in of place.
